Bruce Willis, the actor, and director have been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. His family announced this.
They stated that it was a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis in a social media statement.
The family stated that the 67-year-old was diagnosed last spring with aphasia, which is a condition that causes difficulty with speech. However, his symptoms have improved and he has been given a more precise diagnosis.
They expressed their deepest gratitude for the “incredible outpouring of love”.
Family members stated that frontotemporal dementia was the most common form in those under 60.
The statement stated that “Today there is no treatment for the disease.”
After starring in blockbuster movies like Die Hard, The Sixth Sense and Armageddon, Willis was a household name by the 1980s and 1990s.
He was also nominated for five Golden Globes (winning one for Moonlighting) and three Emmys, where two of which were won.
His family stated last year that Willis would stop acting because his aphasia was negatively affecting his cognitive abilities.
On Thursday, the new statement stated that they hoped media attention would increase awareness about the actor’s condition.
It stated that Bruce believed in using his voice to help others and raise awareness about important topics both publicly and privately.
“We are certain that he would respond to this debilitating illness if he could now, bringing attention and connection to those also suffering from it and the impact it has on so many families.
Members of Willis’s immediate family signed the statement, including Emma Heming, his wife and mother of two daughters. Also, Demi Moore, his ex-wife and three daughters.
There are many causes of dementia.
Dementia refers to the effects of brain disease on memory, language, and thinking skills.
Common causes are Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and vascular dementia.
Bruce Willis’ diagnosis is rare.
This is a rare condition because it mostly affects midlifers, while most other forms of the disease are found in older age.
Frontotemporal dementia is caused when there is a buildup of toxic proteins in the frontal and temporal brain lobes (the ones behind the forehead or ears). These proteins are believed to kill brain cells.
These regions are affected by the damage that affects language (such as Willis’ aphasia), as well as behavior and ability to plan.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease or a way to slow down its progression so it continues to worsen.
People live on average 8-10 years after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. However, some people live longer.
Brian Cox, actor in Red with Willis, stated that the news was very sad and that he was a “witty and great performer.”
Cox stated that he was a lovely person when he spoke to BBC Newscast. He is beautiful. He is still there. He is a wonderful man.”
Maria Shriver, an American journalist, was a prominent advocate for brain disorders patient care and research. She tweeted: “My heart goes to Bruce Willis’ family and also my gratitude for shining light on this disease.
It is a great help to all when people come forward. It’s very difficult for people to receive a diagnosis, but it is a relief for most.
Aaron Paul, who starred as Willis in America’s Breaking Bad TV crime drama added: “Love you so very much my friend!”
Queen Latifah, an actress and singer from the US, wrote on Instagram: “God Bless You My Brother We Love You!” All the best. We are grateful to you and your family for the enjoyment.
Selma Blair, an actress with multiple sclerosis wrote simply: “Sending Love.”
According to the UK NHS Website, frontotemporal dementia is a rare form of dementia that can cause problems in language and behavior.
Other symptoms include stiff or slow movements, loss of bladder control or bowel control (although this is more common later), and muscle weakness.
