An Overview of a Shipyard

Do you ever think about how these large ships and voyages are built? Where are they constructed? Most of us never pay attention to these things, but it does not mean that they do not own any value.

Ships, one of the major modes of transportation used for the transport of goods and passengers, should be constructed without any flaws. Minor negligence may take the life of many individuals who are traveling on that ship. The shipbuilding industry is one of the oldest industries of transport.

What Is a Shipyard

A shipyard that is often interchanged with the dockyard is a place where the ships are built. All the different types of boats are being constructed and repaired at the shipyard. Dockyard is a bit different from the shipyard as it is related to maintenance of the ships.

The shipyard is of great importance as the government owns the naval vessels built on these shipyards. Many countries have shipyards, including: China, Germany, USA, UK, Vietnam, France, Finland, Singapore, Russia, India, and many more. Most of the shipyards are in the European region as opposed of the Asian region.

Shipyards are constructed on the shore so that the ships have easy access to them. These shipyards are large enough to have separate compartments for each task. It includes warehouses, painting facilities, large areas for its constructions, and even a shipbreaking yard. The shipbreaking yard is to dismantle the ships when they have completed their lifecycle. Most often, these ship-breaking yards are in South Asia.

Types of Shipyards

After briefly introducing the shipyard, let us discuss the different types of shipyards in the world. Based on the layout of a shipyard, these shipyards are classified into three main categories.

  1. Small shipyard
  2. Medium shipyard
  3. Large shipyard

Large Shipyard

A large shipyard tends to be run by a committee having the employee and management at the same front. It is also called the joint labor-management committee. This committee works for the welfare of the staff as well as the shipyard. Some of the key duties of this committee include:

  • Workplace inspections
  • Incident investigations
  • Developing work procedures
  • Conducting health and safety training
  • Analyzing workplace safety

Medium shipyard

Medium shipyards do not have the direct involvement of the employees. Still, the employers make sure that the ideas and suggestions for their employees are heard and considered if it works to better the workplace.

The key role of the medium shipyard committee members is:

  • Analyzing the workplace safety
  • Investigation of incidents
  • Workplace investigations
  • Training of the staff

Small Shipyard

In a small shipyard, the employee and employer have a semi-formal relationship as it does not have a large staff, so staff input is taken verbally.
